Not long ago, I was co-managing my financial services business and dreaming of how I could add new revenue streams without disrupting my core work.  

After much research and ambiguity,  Affiliate Marketing seemed like an opportunity that might work as an extension of my online business.   BUT how did that work exactly?

1. Who Am I? (Author’s Journey)

My Personal Journey (Why I left a 6-figure job to become an entrepreneur, adding affiliate marketing to change my life.)

My name is Susan and I spent years in strategizing and marketing for well-known brands. It was exciting—until it wasn’t. The daily grind left me little time for personal enjoyment or time for hobbies or travel. You know that gnawing anxiety in your gut as you go into yet another meeting. I often felt:

I left my corporate role after realizing that no matter how successful I was, I was still trading time for money and building someone else’s dream. I felt stifled by bureaucracy, undervalued by management, and frustrated by the gender biases so many people encounter. This led me to entrepreneurship.

I built a financial services company with my husband. We wanted a life that matched our values — a chance to travel, volunteer, spend more time with family and friends, and embrace every moment with real freedom.

Our new venture is thriving, but it soon became clear that investing, our primary purpose, was inefficient when every decision needed both our approvals. That’s when everything changed.

My hunt for the “perfect” program felt like a whirlwind of letdowns—lofty promises, no results, and even a costly no-refund flop. I was seeking the best affiliate marketing program on the internet! Eventually, I discovered it —but not before I tried multiple programs that fell short on delivery and, in one instance, even caused me to lose my investment.

It was a stressful wake-up call that ultimately pushed me to find a better way.

This means more companies are offering affiliate programs than ever before, which translates into more opportunities for you to earn an online income. This is not an old-fashioned affiliate marketing program. It’s the future — a tailored program built for today’s busy entrepreneurs who want financial freedom, fulfillment, and purpose. This is why I want to share it with you. Gone are the days when affiliate marketing was a one-size-fits-all.

Affiliate marketers build a loyal audience by creating valuable content through platforms — blogs, websites, social media, podcasts, YouTube channels, or email marketing lists.

Building trust with your audience is the most important thing! You do that by only offering high-quality products and services that solve their problems. Each will have a customized affiliate link that you include in your content.

Being transparent about the fact that you are an affiliate for a particular offer maintains trust. I’ve learned to only offer products that I use and love myself. It’s important and makes it easier to recommend with integrity. In that way, you are certain of the value each offers to your audience.

Commissions you receive for this effort varies by company. A general rule-of-thumb is between 30% and 50% for digital products and 5% to 10% for physical products.

3. The Pros & Cons (The Whole Story You Should Know; the Good, Bad, and the Ugly)

Who doesn’t want to know the whole story before making a decision? My goal is to let you in on both sides of the discussion so you can make an informed decision yourself. We’ll start with the GOOD stuff — The Pros.

The Pros

Passive Income Potential

One of the biggest reasons I wanted to set up my Affiliate Marketing system is the idea of Passive Income. When I learned that once you have the system set on “GO” and establish an audience by using Authority Marketing (more on that later), you are not tied to anything. When it’s on automatic, you can sleep, go on vacation, go to the gym, or go hiking. Anything at all. No longer waiting for my paycheck to show up. No ceiling on what you can earn.

I also learned how easy it was to add Affiliate Marketing to our existing business — by just adding it to our existing website. If you already have a customer base, you have an opportunity to grow this base.

If not, they show you how to set it up and attract an audience. All of which we learned from this world-class online business education community.

No Need for Special Skills or Experience

I was concerned in the beginning that I had to have all this technical knowledge or be really accomplished with computers and websites to build an online income. You’ll be glad to know I accomplished all of this with none of that.

You also don’t need to be on YouTube or posting videos of yourself if you don’t want to! However, these strategies can be helpful.

I personally have not been on video or have a large social media following. I also don’t want to be posting all day either.

It’s easy to be intimidated by the chaos on the internet. Just don’t let yourself go there because this is a whole lot easier.

I’m talking about not having to walk into an office building to work (you can work from anywhere), gaining financial freedom, and no ceiling on your income!

It’s an easy lifestyle to complement your exisiting online income, if you have one, or develop a new one from the ground up. The choice is yours!

Now, let’s turn to the Cons.

The Cons

Competition

A basic rule about competitors is to understand who they are, their strengths and weaknesses and the threats they represent.

While Affiliate Marketing is popular and has a low barrier to entry, this means that new competitors pop up (and exit) the market constantly. In this business, it’s important to stay up-to-date with industry trends, new products and services, discover how to differentiate your business from others.

This means you need a silver bullet or secret sauce as I like to say. Authority Marketing (explained later in this post) will illustrate how to develop and apply it effectively online to make it much easier to attract and keep your audience based on trust and solid ethics.

Initial Effort and Financial Investment

One would think that having a low barrier to entry would make it extremely hard to stay ahead of your competitors. In traditional business models that is the case.

If you’re willing to put in the hard work and dedication to get everything up and running, it takes very few, ongoing tweaks to be successful. It’s the upfront effort that is necessary and will enable that passive income in the end.

It goes without saying that you can expect a learning curve at first, especially if you have never done this before. I’m talking about identifying a market niche that fits with your passions, content creation to retain your audience’s interest, and marketing techniques that work. Put in this work early on and you’ll reap the benefits!

One thing I’ve learned is that you can be quite profitable with a relatively small audience. It doesn’t have to be multiple thousands. You want the loyal people who identify with your passion. (something you’ll learn in Authority Marketing).

There is so much information and chaos on the internet so beware. Don’t get caught in those get-rich schemes. It’s not as simple as just reading through the online books, articles, and listening to gurus. You can do this on your own but do you really want to? Because time is of the essence, I was seeking a profitable business to replace my full-time income. I didn’t have a social following, so I was motivated to get the autopilot going. One frequent misstep for beginners in Affiliate Marketing is choosing businesses with affiliate programs that offer very low commissions — such as Amazon, Walmart, Nike and so forth. You get the picture!

If your goal is to earn a full-time salary, you’d have to have hundreds or even thousands in monthly sales. Talk about overwhelming!

Focus on partnering with companies that offer quality High-Ticket Affiliate Marketing programs. It will make the difference in your income! Specifically, commissions can be hundreds to thousands of dollars per sale. 

Also, by focusing on high-ticket products, you’re targeting a specific audience where you can become a trusted authority creating long-term relationships – making them more likely to buy. 

It’s all about needing fewer items of good quality at a higher price that is appealing to your audience.

Affiliate marketing provides an excellent opportunity to start earning income online without the need for previous experience or special skills.

To be clear, I was where you are not too long ago! Maybe you have your own business but see the gaps in cashflow and the threat of customers leaving for economic or competitive reasons. Maybe you are one of those unlucky folks losing your job through downsizing for whatever reason. (That’s happened to me more than once!)
